Because words and their meanings matter to bears...

Sometimes you buy something that needs assembly. You look for the instructions and start reading only to find the person who wrote or interpreted them did not understand English. Well my mom says if you're my dad, you don't read them, unless all else fails. Look what I found on a blog called 'Fail Blog' - A blog that specializes in posting photos of things that fail to communicate.

While the words on this sign at first glance made this bear question some of the word choices and sign placement. I must admit, I considered the irony. Then I visited the sponsor Free the Bears site and learned more.

The only failure we have here is as my grandpaw says; "What we have here is a failure to communicate."


With the help of a dictionbeary* the word enclosure and the word free have contradictory meanings. Perhaps it should read "THIS ENCLOSURE SPONSORED FOR THE PROTECTION OF BEARS by Free the Bears Fund, Inc. because the bears who are enclosed have been rescued from circumstances of torture and abuse. This enclosure protect them from the people that would harm them.

The organization www.freethebears.org.au is a great organization that is working to save tortured and mistreated bears in India, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesian Borneo. Their site has a lot of great information about bears and their plight. Perhaps you'd like to help them.

So the word 'enclosure' to the bears who are released to live within the enclosure means they are in a sense free! So sad that they can't be released back into the wild, but they would just be captured again by their abusers. This post has covered some tough* topics. I'm sure you feel moved, especially if you checked out the link to Free the Bears.

So I feel it is on a lighter note I tell you about a place in NH that has performing bears. They have had bear shows for 65 years. Their bears are never forced to perform if they don't want to perform, there is no show. Real show bears, they work for ice cream! Sign me up! The bear trainers do not abuse them. I haven't bearsonally seen a show, but I have seen a real bear there, back in my fluffier days.

I was there with mom & dad just after they had closed the park for the season, but the Trading Post was still open for the leaf peepers. Mom, dad and brother T. have seen the shows. They told me those bears love ice cream cones and apples. They have something else there, that scares small children, it's Wolfman . Over the years I know he has traumatized many a child innocently riding the train.


Spelling Tips from a bear:
*dictionbeary - Don't try to look this one up, and for heavens sake, if you're in grammar school don't spell it this way on a spelling test.
*tough - Don't spell this the way my dad did. When he was a kid, and the word showed up on his spelling test, he got it wrong. Thanks to the many years of my NH grandpa jokingly telling him the wrong spelling. He used to say "that's tough, T-U-F-F".
